どちらかと言えば私はマイペースなので、団体行動をあまり得意としません。
Not sure if it has anything to do with my blood type, I’m not very comfortable being in a big group.
ツアー旅行が苦手なのも、それが原因でしょう。
Maybe that is why I don’t really like traveling by a group package tour.
ツアーにも沢山の利点があります。
It has its advantages, of course.
まず、楽チン。
It’s super easy.
自分で計画を立てなくても、効率的に見所を抑えたスケジュールが組まれるので、それに乗っかれば良いだけ。
Their itinerary is perfectly organized. You don’t even have to plan your trip, you just follow the group.
でも、やはり欲が出て、あれも見たい、これも食べたい、と果てしない自分の欲望を満たすには自由な旅が最適。
なので、もっぱら自由気ままな個人旅行。
I just want to do whatever I want whenever I want, so I prefer going solo.
Trip to Vegas Part2
今回は、福岡ー成田ーロサンゼルスーラスベガスの６泊８日の旅。
I went on a trip for 6 nights.
アメリカ入国の際は入国前までにESTAの申請をしなければいけないのを出発数日前まですっかり忘れていました。
I had completely forgotten about ESTA till just a few days prior to my departure.
*ESTAとは日本人が観光やビジネスなど90日以内の短期滞在を目的としてアメリカに訪れる場合、事前に電子渡航認証システム「ESTA（エスタ）」の認証を受けなければなりません。認証を受けていないとアメリカに入国することができません。理想的には搭乗７２時間前の申請です。
パソコンから行いましたが、何度もエラーが出て承認されるまで何度もやり直し、時間がかかりました。余裕を持って行うようにしましょう。
I applied for it on my PC, but it kept on giving me errors and it was absolutely frustrating.
ロサンゼルス空港での入国審査はいつも通り長い列。
Like always, there was a long line at the immigration at LAX.
パスポートと機内で配られる税関申告書を持って順番を待ちます。
You wait in line with your passport and the custom declaration form.
顔写真に指紋採り…と保安検査の強化に伴い、とても慎重になされます。
They take your photo and the fingerprints, followed by some questions.
審査員の質問を覚えておいてレッスンで生徒さんに伝えなきゃと思っていましたが。。
“Where are you going?” 「どこへ行かれますか？」 の問いに、
“Las Vegas.”と答えると。。“Ohh, you are going to hit the casinos, huh?”「ははーん、カジノやりに行くんだねぇ！」とスロットをするジェスチャーでニヤリとされました。苦笑
“Nah, I’m not a big gambler. I just want to see some shows.”「ギャンブルは興味ないけどショーが観たい。」と私。
“Did you bring your swimsuit?” 「水着は持ってきたのかい？」
の問いに”No.”と答えると、
“Oh, come on! You’ve gotta bring one!” 「もってこなきゃ！」と話は審査とはまったく関係のない方向へ。
“What do you do in Japan?” 「日本での仕事は？」
“I teach English.” 「英語教えています。」
“What’s it like teaching English to Japanese people? Isn’t it hard?” 「日本人に英語教えるってどんな感じ？難しくない？文法とかまったく逆でしょう？どうやって教えてるの？」などとダラダラと話が続きます。。
まぁ、こんな感じでまるで世間話でした。
審査員にもよるでしょうが、普通は以下のようなやり取りが想定されます。
What’s the purpose of your visit? 「訪問の目的は？」
– Sightseeing. 「休暇です。」
How long are you going to stay in the US? 「米国の滞在期間は？」
– One week. 「一週間です。」
Are you traveling alone? 「一人で旅行していますか？」
– No, I’m with my friend. 「友達とです。」
答えは簡潔で構いませんが、はっきりと大きな声で目を見て答えることが大事です。
ロサンゼルスからラスベガスへの飛行時間は1.5時間程度。
飛行機の窓から見下ろすと、広大な砂漠の中にラスベガスがドッカーンと見えてきます。
The flight to McCarran International Airport was only about 1.5hrs. You look out the window, and Ta-da!, there is Vegas right in the middle of the dessert.
空港にはすでに多数のスロットマシーンがずらりと並んでいます。(1,000台以上あるらしい）
You see hundreds of slot-machines at the airport.
ホテルまではエアポートシャトルを利用。空港外にでるといくつかブースがあるので、一番安いシャトルで往復のチケットを購入。
I get the round-trip tickets for the airport shuttle.
“I’d like a round-trip ticket.” 「往復チケットを一枚お願いします。」
“Which hotel? “と尋ねられるので、ホテル名を言いましょう。
ホテルに到着し、ドライバーが荷物を降ろしてくれます。
We get to the hotel, and the driver helps me with my baggage.
Thank you.と言って立ち去ろうとしますが、ドライバーはそこに立ったまま。
I say “Thanks.” but he keeps on standing there.
あ、お心づけ（チップ）ね。。
Oh, gratuity.
ちなみに。。。 旅行最終日は小銭が余りがちです。
By the way, you know how you end up with lots of coins at the end of your trip?
小銭は両替できないので使い切って帰国したいものです。
You want to use them up before going home since they cannot be exchanged.
私は日本のダイソーで買っておいた侍の絵柄が入った「ぽち袋」を持参、それに使いきれなかった25セントコインを１ドル紙幣と共にいれてチップとして帰りのシャトルドライバーに渡しました。
I brought little envelops and put the quarters there with a dollar bill and gave it to the driver back to the airport on the final day of my trip.
小銭のチップってちょっと渡しづらいですし、日本的なぽち袋を渡すと喜んでもらえますよ♪
He seemed to have been pleased with that.
もちろん、ホテルのメイドさん用にベッド横に置いておくこともできます。
You could also leave it next to your bed for the maid at the hotel.
昔、私の生徒さんはヨーロッパ旅行中、持参した現金２０万円相当のユーロを防犯のために枕の下に置いて就寝。
One of my students slept with his bundle of cash worth around $2,000 underneath the pillow because he had thought it was the safest place.
翌朝寝坊をして慌ててバスに乗った直後、ホテルのメイドさんが大慌てで札束を持ってバスを追いかけて来てくれたらしいです。
The next morning he overslept and hurried up to the bus. Just then, the maid ran to his bus with his cash he had left behind.
メイドさんあっぱれ。
Kudos to her!
生徒さんは動揺が収まらずそのメイドさんにチップを渡す余裕もなくバスは発車。
Unfortunately, my student was a little shaken up by it and left there without tipping her.
今でも心残りらしいです。
He’s still hang up on it.
